For this piece the silver vessel is mounted on a layered column of blocks created from shredded, pulped and reconstituted diaries, photograph albums, scrapbooks and letters.

This process disengages the articles from their emotional and personal associations and allows them to function purely as an embodiment of memory. The recycled substance becomes representative of memory and the process of remembrance, building over time, with no specific reference to a particular event or individual.

helmert robbertson

Born in New Zealand of Dutch parents he has lived and worked in London for many years. He studied silversmithing and metalwork at Camberwell College of Arts and teaches at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. His work draws inspiration from the constancy and immortality of silver and the significance of silver objects as markers of temporal events, souvenirs and offerings. It is also influenced by the necessity of preserving memories as a vital facet of day to day life. The aim is to produce a ritualistic or ceremonial object. A contemplative piece of work exploring the nature of memory. The objects are devoid of adornment, an unembellished form, simple and restrained. They act as an evocative emotional trigger, a means of retaining memory resisting excessive sentimentality or morbidity.
